a few nights ago i saw LETTER FROM IWO JIMA-- several months ago i saw the campanion film of FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS-- these were two exceptionally brilliant films directed by clint eastwood on the battle for iwo jima - each film was told from the viewpoint of each side fighting over this island- american and japanese -- it displayed the cultural differences of each side and how these conflicts are viewed and ultimately how each side proceeds to act in this type of enviroment--there was definitely two viewpoints on display in films and in the end i thought both sides believed in what they were doing in the name of their country --that is the main theme of these great films but there were also many multifacet elements highlighting the social attitudes during this period of american/japanese history--- fascinating achievement by clint eastwood and surely worth the time to watch two classic films
this is always amazing to me that as eastwood gets older he seems to create even more brilliant films -- this from the guy who got his start in films starring in spaghetti westerns -- who would have believed it back then -- he also along with his son scored these films -- he cowrote them with paul haggis - there is not much more this guy can do
