MINNOWS

the minnows had an evening meet tonight and had a nice crowd cheering then on to victory over birchywood guppies -- lots of action--- you sure do see the the difference between the younger swimmers and the older ones with more experience and proficiency -- it is a great development program for youngsters and it is evident in these meets that the young ones try really hard and will be at the level of the older members quickly if they continue with the program here at la, at school and home-- this is a program that is well deserving of being supported and encouraged by the community---

others also need to be identified and supported to extend programs to other members children and teens--- some that come to mind are volleyball, soccer, basketball, softball, mini baseball clinics, mini fooball clinics, water polo, canoe racing, kayak racing and other non traditional open water activities--- the expansion of activities that are relevant to today's young children and teens is important in that it gives these groups more interest in coming to la and in turn gets their parents in a more engaged role here at la-- right now meaningful activities are nonexistent outside of the minnows program -- that is not good for la -- the programs now offered are limited and not an inducement to come to la--- ceramics for kids ....yea or bingo for the seniors....keeps them out of trouble----bingo candy .....hmmm right after their dental cleaning-- and etc. --

this is 2009 and la needs to interest a new generation of families that have their own needs and aren't interested in what was done in 1970-- enuf 4 now----let me know if any1 has thoughts on this issue

COMMENT REPLY

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "JUNK CARS":
This is something to inquire about at the next board meeting. Maybe those directly affected should send a letter or e-mail to Joe Birrell, the Community Compliance Officer and a paid LA employee, prior to the next meeting and request it be publically addressed. Those of us indirectly affected can then weigh in with our dissatisfaction on Aug 16th. I'm sure prospective buyers find the junk as unattractive as we do. Hopefully a new Community Mgr will start cleaning things up. We may have to be patient as the BOD has their hands full with interviewing and replacing the Community Mgr and working with the new attorney on the 12' wide issue. Two important subjects that also need to be addressed at the next meeting.

anon-- i think that there appeared to be some effort to get weeds cut early this spring with a reminder in each weekly flyer -- but that was dropped shortly after it ran a few weekends ergo before the majority of the summer members arrived -- there is no coordinated, consistent, concerted effort to remind members of their responsibilities through print media such as the weekly flyer, the web page or the quarterly adventurer publication to accomplish any particular effort to clean up their properties, remove unlicensed vehicles, remove tarps from trailers, clean up leaves from drainage swales -- it is a miss and hit effort that fails all the time because it is not in front of the members when they're here (weekly flyer), doesn't appear in the adventurer which every member gets (at a high cost to produce and deliver) and is filled with the same boiler plate messages year after year-- the adventurer is a perfect vehicle to set the qualty of life standards that are going to be expected from each member for any program that the bod wants to use to improve la-- a way to introduce a compliance procedures consisting of written notices for non compliance, warnings and finally the leveling of fines for noncompliance and the time frames for each stage of the compliance procedures-- after this type of procedure is executed there should be no member that would have a right to complain that he wasn't aware of the effort at achieving improvement throughout la-- this type of effort must be followed through by the la management team in a even, fair enforcement of the rules without any bias present in the enforcement effort if it is to be successful -- while it is labor intensive and some what expensive at the beginning it should lighten up considerably as it works its way through the members and they realize that the stated quality of life goals will be achieved--- as for those that don't respond positively then the bod should use enhanced, very costly fines and costly liens to get at the members and get them to comply or leave-- some people will find it more advantageous to get out voluntarily or get out by losing their property-- it isn't pleasant situation ... but these uncooperative members have no interest in la or the welfare of the community and should not be here

a little rough? i don't think so

ps-- i don't think the bod will exactly spend a lot of time vetting a new manager-- i think it will amount to a matter of good luck or bad luck and the la membership will have to live with the result -- the 12' wide issue i think is in the hands of new legal counsel-- if this attorney knows what he's doing he'll be up to speed quite fast and with minimal input from the la bod== no excuses are acceptable for not getting these two issues completed for the la members

JUNK CARS

LA RV COMMUNITY IS TURNING INTO A PARKING LOT FOR JUNK VEHICLES-

there are quite a few cars parked here at la that are not inspected, licensed or in running order -- there must be reason way la can't get these vehicle owners to get these vehicles out of here -- i don't what it is but you know if the rules do not cover this problem then they need to be modified to give the community association the authority to address this problem and remove these vehicles -- after all there are home owners associations all over the country that have all kinds of restrictive rules from what type of flower pots you can use or the type of color you can select to paint the exterior of your property -- there are many more and some of them may be crazy but they are out there and homeowners associations are able to enforce them -- la must begin to get into this problem of junk, inoperable vehicles, unlicensed vehicles, construction trailers and equipment, trailers with race cars and more that i haven't seen yet--

there is a junk vehicle at the lake shore with broken windows and florida plates that probably aren't current -- with the value of the lakefront properties what they are --i'd be complaining like hell to the bod for allowing this member to depress my property value and also complaining about the few that don't maintain their properties with mowing or weed control -- these are the prime properties of the community and the lakefront property owners have the most to protect in the value of those properties--

this is the same throughout the community-- a few are allowed to junk up the neighborhood-- and from what i see these same people do nothing to maintain their properties in any other way and probably aren't paying their dues -- these problems need to addressed by modifying the rules to get these people to comply or to get these people out of the community in a expedited manner-- the current method of waiting until the county sells the property at a sheriff sale is a very long drawn out process that take years and is unacceptable-- there must be a better more efficient manner to handle these absent, neglectful members who are devaluing every ones property-- the bod needs to address these problems and at the next open bod meeting the members should voice their concerns

polaroid led

i returned the polaroid led tv because it was did not work-- the clerk said he knew there were problems with this product but he didn't think it was that bad -- yea really-- oh well

picked up a sony -- works great

SWIM MEET

NICE LOGO!
the big celebration -- la day is coming up next saturday -- so plan to attend

today there was a swim meet with the minnows -- big crowd and i must say those kids sure are competitive -- they really did well -- i don't know which club got the most points but it was really nice--- tonight the team had a tricky tray function and i guess they had a good turn out-- there is a lot of support for this activity and thats good for the community

weather has been excellent -- sunny and mild tempeatures with again no humidity -- it has been a great run of good weekends weather wise

important and it's not crap

yes you should use scott tissue in your bathroom at la -- also avoid flushing wipes, personal napkins, babies diapers or condoms in the hoppers -- these cause blockages and are costly to unclog -- this is a very expensive cost for the community-- while scott may cost slightly more it is the right thing to do for your community

great day

sunny with nice temps -- no humidity --- heaven at la -- weekend looks good--
ice cream social tonight was a big success as usual -- can't beat the deal--
maintenance still working on the drainage culverts along the roads -- looks like they're doin a good job -- should take care of runoff for a while--

MAD MEN RETURNS - THE BEST SHOW ON TV-- SUNDAY 10PM -- AMC

Review: 'Mad Men' will persuade you to stay tuned

By Robert Bianco, USA TODAY
For TV's most enticing trip to the past, the future is now.
Returning Sunday for a second season, Mad Men is riding a wave of publicity and praise, from Emmy nominations to Television Critics Association awards. With luck, that wave will wash a few more viewers over to AMC, where they'll discover the chilling brilliance of Matthew Weiner's creation: a show that reflects the present in a smoky '60s mirror.
Welcome aboard the bandwagon, but take note: You don't so much follow Mad Men as sink into it. Returning once again to the polished, slicked-back constraints of a New York advertising agency on the cusp of a massive cultural shift, the first two episodes are more focused on character, tone and atmosphere than in advancing the mechanics of the plot. It's like life itself: There are days when nothing seems to happen, and yet much is happening.
And at the center of it all is Jon Hamm's seductively intense Don Draper, a genius of persuasion who has persuaded all around him to accept a personal history invented out of whole cloth. He's quite literally the all-American self-made man, and as changing mores swirl around him, he's growing dissatisfied with the product.
The show opens with a jump in time to Valentine's Day 1962, as Jackie Kennedy gives a televised White House tour that — like so much in this show — is less lovely and sanguine than appearances would first reveal. There is no Camelot here, and none of the characters' lives have turned out quite as they had hoped.
The beauty and joy of Mad Men is the way it immerses us in a shimmering view of the early '60s, a seemingly well-ordered world fueled by cigarettes and alcohol, where men and women wear their clothes and hair like suits of armor, and look darn good doing so. We know it's a facade, of course, and one that is about to shatter under an assault of drugs, sex, race, rock 'n' roll and Vietnam. The genius of the writing and the acting is the way it reveals what we may have missed at the time: The cracks are already there.
Nowhere is that more obvious than in the portrayal and performances of the show's main female characters. There's Don's wife, Betty (January Jones, stunningly beautiful in a Valentine's dress), who traded modeling for marriage and has begun to question the bargain she made. There's Joan (Christina Hendricks), the steely, sexy secretary driven by the realization that her position is perilous. And there's Peggy (Elisabeth Moss), so determined to rise from secretary to one of the ad boys that she's hiding a baby from everyone — including, it seems, from herself.
Catch Mad Men now, and you have the happy experience of jumping into a show at the height of its powers and confidence. Terrifically acted and gorgeously produced, this is a show that's both funny and frightening, that can simultaneously make you miss the '60s and feel blessed that they're gone. If it were an ad for scripted TV, it would persuade you to invest.
If this is the future of TV, the future's looking good.

CONSERVATION

AT THE OPEN BOD MEETING THERE WAS A COMMENT ABOUT EXTERIOR LIGHTING AND THAT SOME PEOPLE EXCEED THE COMMUNITY RULES -- WELL FIRST OF ALL THE COMMUNITY RULE IS NOT REALISTIC. THE LIGHTING STANDARDS TODAY TAKE INTO ACCOUNT SAFETY AND SECURITY AS WELL AS CONVENIENCE. THESE ISSUES ARE LEGITIMATE AND CAN VARY FROM ONE PERSON TO THE NEXT. THIS COULD ACCOUNT FOR VARIATIONS IN LIGHTING REQUIREMENTS BETWEEN COMMUNITY MEMBERS. ===

--- BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY IS THAT EVERYONE COULD SAVE ENERGY AND REDUCE USAGE BY USING THE NEW CFI BULBS. FEW IF ANY DO BECAUSE OF THE PRICE INVOLVED. CFI BULBS ARE AT LEAST 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE THAN INCANDESCENT BULBS. MANY JUST REFUSE TO SPEND THE MONEY FOR CFI. I HAVE 9 INTERIOR LIGHTS IN MY TRAILER AND THEY ARE ALL CFI BULBS. THE ONLY INTERIOR LIGHTS THAT AREN'T CFI ARE THE REFRIGERATOR LIGHT, STOVE HOOD LIGHT WHICH HAVE INCANDESCENT BULBS AND AND THE SINK COUNTER LIGHTS WHICH ARE HALOGEN LIGHTING. EXTERIOR LIGHTING IS HALOGEN LIGHTS.

ANOTHER PLACE TO REDUCE USAGE IS TO STOP WATER LEAKS AND CONSERVE WATER. I INSTALLED A LOW VOLUMNE FLUSH HOPPER. THESE GREATLY REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF WATER THAT IS USED FOR TOILETS, THE PRICE IS NOW DOWN TO LESS THAN A HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR A NEW TOILET AND ARE AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE. WATER SUPPLY HOSES THAT LEAK AT THE CONNECTIONS USUALLY NEED A NEW WASHER WHICH COSTS PENNIES. MAYBE A NEW HOSE IS REQUIRED. A LITTLE MORE EXPENSIVE BUT SHOULD LAST FOR YEARS IF YOU MAINTAIN IT PROPERLY. LEAKING WATER SUPPLY LINES AND LEAKING FAUCETS SHOULD BE REPAIRED. THE WATER USAGE COST LA COMMUNITY BIG BUCKS IN THAT WE PAY FOR THE SYSTEM TO SUPPLY WATER AND THE SYSTEM TO TREAT SEWAGE. THE MORE WE PUMP OUT AND THE MORE WE HAVE TO TREAT ADDS UP TO A LARGE COST TO THE MEMBERSHIP.

SO CONSERVATION IN ELECTRIC USAGE AND WATER CONSERVATION PRACTICES WILL GO A LONG WAY TO KEEP THESE COSTS UNDER CONTROL AND THEN YOU WON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT A MEMBER HAVING AN EXTRA BULB THE ONE OR TWO WEEKS OF THE YEAR THAT HE'S HERE AT LA.

I'VE NOTICED THAT MOST OF THESE COMPLAINTS COME FROM THE NESTERS WHO ARE HERE MOST OF THE YEAR ( WINK -- WINK) AND USE MORE SERVICES THAN ANYONE ELSE. THEY SURELY SHOULD BE THE LAST TO COMPLAIN!

Hi there Chipper, I'm so glad I found this blog, perhaps now, I can get some answers. Why is it that none of the links to LA rules and regulations work? (And there are quite a few)I find that odd.How long are you able to stay at LA in one clip? 2 months, 4 months? Are you allowed to have two dogs?I am in the process of negotiating a deal for a LA purchase and I feel that these answers are being avoided.Whats up with this? Thanks! Nice blog btw

When you went to the township meetings the end of '07 what was holding up the approval of 12' wides? Did the attorney have her act together and present a good case?

anon: the first meeting seemed to leave a lot to be desired-- i didn't think the la attorney fully understood the la position and didn't display a strong grasp on the facts pertaining to the la situation-- the second meeting she was able to counter the credibility of one of the township expert witnesses-- the other witness was unchallengeable---i would not have been satisfied with the attorney's performance if i was paying the bill----

nonymous has left a new comment on your post "RESPONSE TO COMMENT":

I purchased a site at LA last Summer and now we find ourselves needing to sell what we bought due to medical reasons. We're looking at buying another site that doesn't require as much landscaping and one that is "move-in" ready. So...here are some opinions that I've formed recently. I think the Association needs to make it more convenient for property owners to sell their sites. I think when a list of properties is provided for re-slae at the office, an address should be provided. Someone who is unfamiliar with LA could drive around all day and only find 2-3 properties that are for sale. I also think that property owners should be permitted to put 1 For Sale sign on their propery with contact information. Perhaps if we made it easier for folks to sell their property, rather than going through the agent on site, there may be less of what appear to be abandoned properties, i.e. rusted out trailers that are clearly abandoned. The lack of property maintenance requirements and enforcement of any kind of rules concerning the up-keep of property is my primary concern. Failing to enforce rules concerning standards and conditions only lowers the value of everyone elses property. Do a Google search on deeded rv lots and look at the prices - some of them are astronomical. Now, I'm happy that LA doesn't fall into the astronomical range, however, I would like to think that I'. making an investment that will grow in value over time. Lack of maintenance and lack of enforcing rules concerning maintenance will not make it possible for anyone's property to increase in value, or in many instances even MAINTAIN value. I certainly hope that the Board of Directors takes a closer look at both of the issues I've cited on this blog and addresses them in the future.

anon: i agree that their are distressed and derelict properties and they do undercut the value of your property-- an approach is necessary to get people engaged in la and get them to take care of their properties or make it easier for people to sell properties that they no longer have an interest in using or maintaining--the la web page should have a listing of properties for sale-- other communities offer this service with the ability to add the slide show feature to display pictures of the properties and a description of the property-- i strongly believe the resale procedure is hampered by the association with the on site realtor-- he has a situation here at la that strongly favors him and is not beneficial to the property owner or the la community as a whole-- this realtor should not have the advantages that he has and the support he gets from the la management -- he has office space on site, he is prominently featured in the la web site and he is always in the la bulletin and flyers-- if he is not paying fair market value for these benefits then the finance committee should review this relationship and sever it...... or get it on a more fair financial footing-- making this issue transparent would go a long way to reassuring the members that the resale procedure is fair and is beneficial for la members-- right now i don't think many people feel that is the case....for sale signs are probably restricted for the same reason -- realtor doesn't want them

another issue is that la has few if any contractors that do property maintenance work--- again i believe that this is because the la management favor a few and blocks others from working at la--last year i called a half dozen plumbers to do a job and i got the same answer from almost all of them -- they don't do work at la---that isn't good for the community when you are limited to a few contractors that have a stranglehold on the community and others won't come here to work--that's bad for all of us

Minutes from May's meeting haven't been published, not a good start for the new Board. Many can't make it to the meetings and rely on this information. Still nothing on the 12' wide issue and it's now over five months for the attorney to schedule a meeting with the township. It will be harder and harder to attract new members if we can't improve the housing situation. Thought an attorney was going to send out letters threatning a property lien for unpaid dues. I can't make the meeting, is someone able to bring these issues up? We may have a complaint here and there but overall there are many community improvements going on and our dues are put to good use. Nice to see kids running around enjoying the facilities, the pool looks great. Entertainment committee is doing a nice job.

anon: yes yes yes and yes and maybe-- i'll also be interested in the 12' wide ststus-- and the attorney status-- maybe we'll get a better feel for how things are goin with the new board-- this will be their chance to show the membership which direction they are taking on the 12' wide issue and yes i agree -- i went to 2 meetings in the latter part of '07 and one that was canceled the day of the meeting by the attorneys -- not a public meeting since then -- it now is about 9 months since the last public meeting--(this is known as real progress in legal terms????) BUT let's give this new board a chance to show us what progress they have made in this matter and then we'll have another shot at them at the 16 august meeting if we're not satisfied --- i wonder how many others have an opinion on this matter and why don't they comment?? i know i'd like to hear the pro or con opinions from other members -- hopefully i'll hear from some of them -- chipper

ps-- yes i must say that i think the activities schedules have been enhanced this season and the response from the members attending the functions indicates that many are taking advantage of the additional programs -- that's good for all -- ENGAGEMENT OF LA MEMBERS is paramount to the welfare of the community and if more needs to be done with financial support for the activities schedules it should be taken under consideration by the budget committee -- you do not lose money on activities when the membership supports the activities--it's money well invested in the future of the community

4th of july!

a hugh success -- la had nice crowds with all activities really crowded-- the pool was jumping all day, tonight the miniature golf was busy -- that's the most people i ever saw there-today were curbside yard sales all over the community- bingo games tonight were well attended -- i played a few games even though i know next to nothing about bingo, thanks for the women at the table they guided me through --- no wins but close-- i think that's why people play = get close-- last night's hay rides were overflowing and the kids love the road bumps--the 2... yes count them 2 dances were crowded --- so i think this must be a really close to record weekend for la --- it again is important that more people attend the activity functions the more engaged the members are in la-- over the weekend a lot of cleaning up was occurring throughout the community and the dumpsters were overflowing-- the place is looking pretty good with many but not all with the lots trimmed and raked up-- in fact several on my street were cleaned up for the first time in at least two years-- maybe new owners or maybe just the emphasis to encourage people to come to la for a great weekend-- hopefully this participation will continue

REPLAY

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "RESPONSE TO COMMENT":
Rule #1 in Business - if you aren't always attracting new customers, you may as well throw in the cards and call it quits! From mom and pop stores to major corporations, do you think they get to a point and say "OK thats enough, we don't need any new customers, we're satisfied with what we have. Hell no. When Mc'Donalds created the Big Mac, did they say "Ok thats it we can live off this forever". No way, now you can get salads, grilled chicken sandwiches, and apples to mention a few. They keep their staple items but they are always trying something new to appeal to new customers. Chipper you are right, we need to appeal to 2008 families otherwise we will turn into a rundown RV slum, as you stated. I'm about as happy about the increase in dues as anyone else, however I understand that if we want to improve while paying off debt, our association needs more money, and dues is our main source of income. I would like to see the association issue warnings for violations, like not upkeeping your lot and then following up with a summons, which could turn into a lien if unpaid so that if the property sells, LACA would still be able to collect their money upon the sale. OK maybe that's going too far, but I think if a few summons' were issued in honor of upkeeping your lot the community would quickly benefit, and look a lot better. Maybe they could hold your passes until all outstanding summons' are paid in full(maybe this is done already-not sure). Just a couple of suggestions, in case the board is reading this! I have more suggestions if anyone is interested by the way. Have a great July 4th weekend and see you at the pool!

anon-- i couldn't agree with you more--- la is a good community but it is in trouble financially with the heavy debt load they carry for the mandated upgrades of the water and sewer system--and quite frankly they aren't anywhere done with system upgrades - as soon as they feel they are there-- OH NO !-----the goalpost will be moved and more work will need to be done to maintain compliance-- it called progress with environmental concerns and requirements-- the w&s liability will be a financial drain on this community for the foreseeable future and beyond----
and they have others issues of compliance in other areas of the facilities services and they will at some time come up and need to be addressed---

la must start to maximize this communities assets and start saving money to lessen the need to raise dues everytime a situation arises (like our currrent financial situation with the us economy)and needs money thrown at it-- it needs to become a community that is anchored in 2008 and appeal to new members-- that means new attitude adjustments in how la is managed, programs presented, and to move off of a 3 month season and become a YEAR ROUND, 4 SEASON community-- they need to get all properties into a paying situation -- empty lots and nonproductive ($) lots are death to a community--

members need to be engaged in their community -- now they are not --

  • only 600+ members out of 2000 vote for the bod
  • properties are not maintained
  • dues are in default
  • housing stock is aging and not being replaced (30 years is the limit on trailer life span)

engaged members will reverse the problems listed above

current la management must start to move in a new direction -- and they do have quite a few options to start moving in that direction and

the members that currently follow what is happening in the affairs of the community must become more vocal and express their concerns, objections, complaints, and demand and hold la management to goals that enhance the interests of the whole community

we'll see what happens at the next open bod meeting on 19 july -- lots of issues still out there and the new makeup of the bod will be on display-- watch for what they say!----chipper

You have no right to take pictures of other peoples property. Do you get their permission to post their belongings?
